Lake Champlain is 120 miles long and the sixth largest freshwater lake in the US with 600 miles of coastline. The Juniper Island lighthouse is the oldest standing cast-iron tower in the United States and it is similiar to the Monomoy Point lighthouse in MA. In 1954 the light was replaced by a 60 foot steel skeleton tower. In 1962 the Keeper’s dwelling was very damaged by a fire but in 2001 the new owners, the Fayettes, rebuilt the house using 17,890 of the original bricks. Juniper Island is covered with poison ivy and a little over three miles from Burlington, VT. The very tall trees on the 13 acres island obscure the tower and one can only see parts of the top half from the water. The Spirit of Ethan Allen III says they pass the breakwater lights and Juniper Island during their cruise.The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
Finally in 2010 we boarded the Northern Lights Lake Champlain Cruises out of Burlington, VT. The inexpensive narrated scenic cruise aboard the 115 foot replica steamboat was enjoyable and picturesque. We cruised very close to the Burlington South Breakwater light, then distantly passed the Juniper Island light, and fairly close to the Burlington North Breakwater before again passing the south breakwater back to port. In the future we hope to see it by plane along with other lights on the lake.Photographed it: September 15, 2010
