The Duluth South Breakwater Outer lighthouse is on the south breakwall. The two breakwalls protrude 1,150 feet out from the shoreline and there's a 300 foot wide span between the two. On nice days the breakwalls are filled with people walking or fishing. On stormy days it can be a very dangerous, possibly deadly, place to be.The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
When we first saw this light in 2001, we walked on the opposite breakwater to see it. Then in 2009 we were on the Vista Fleet Harbor Cruise. During the 90 minute cruise we slowly pass the three lighthouses and went under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. The boat took us through the canal out past the two outer breakwater lights. We finally got the perspective of a ship coming into a safe harbor. It was a nice inexpensive boat trip. The following day on our way out of Minnesota we stopped by again. I stood on the Lift Bridge and took a picture of all three lights in the same shot. In 2012 we walked out to it and took a few more shots.
