In 1976 the lighthouse was built by Jim Gibbs, author of twenty-one maritime books and former lighthouse keeper of Tillamook Rock. In 1979 his lighthouse became an official aid to navigation. It's a replica of the 1898 Fiddle Reef lighthouse in British Columbia, Canada. It's ten miles north of Heceta Head on Hwy. 101. Jim Gibbs also built the Skunk Bay lighthouse in Hansville, WA in the 1960's. Unfortunately historian, Jim Gibbs died in May 2010. His daughter and son in law own the house now. Inside the lighthouse there are several historical maritime items. The lighthouse is named after a Christian hymn called "He Hideth My Soul in the Cleft of the Rock".The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
Since the lighthouse is a private residence and clearly marked we had to take our pictures from Highway 101. We had to be very careful at the turnout of this curvy road because there is limited visibility. The Oregon coast is very beautiful and it is tempting to stare at the view while driving, but don't. While making this webpage I noticed a man in our pictures, it must have been Jim Gibbs.Photographed it: June 10, 2003
