Other Lighthouse Information:
The Sandy Hook lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in the United States and was the 5th lighthouse to be built in America. When it was built it stood 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook. Today, due to growth caused by littoral drift, it's around 1 ½ miles inland from the tip. Traveling here during the summer months is much more difficult. The shore beaches create traffic and fill up the parking lots early in the day. Then there is a parking toll to get to the lighthouse and beaches on the hook. Many New Jersey lighthouses, including this one, take part in the annual NJ Lighthouse Challenge. Then for this fall weekend one can climb it at night.
The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
We live only a few miles from the Sandy Hook Peninsula and have visited the lighthouse several times. On May 12, 2007 we met my parents at the lighthouse and we climbed the lighthouse with my Dad during the tour. On January 21, 2011 right after another snow storm stopped we had blue skies and I went right to the Sandy Hook lighthouse. I was out photographing for 3 ½ hours in the wind. It was very beautiful with the snow still in the trees.
Photographed it: over 20 times, the last visit was on January 21, 2011
