You can't see the Sapelo Island lighthouse from the mainland because it’s several miles out. Sapelo Island is 11 miles long by 2 ½ miles wide and the two lighthouses are on the SSW side. Around 60 people live on the island daily and the others are visitors who rent for the weekends. There’re many historical points of interest like the Reynolds Mansion, Post Office, cemetery, store and more. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance for the Georgia State Parks.The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
We tried to get on a boat to Sapelo Island back in 2003 but it didn't happen. In 2007 we made plans in advance and booked it. Yvonne Grovner was the tour guide for the 36 people on our tour. During our tour we saw many Live Oaks trees with Spanish Moss hanging from them and an alligator. When we got to the Sapelo Island lighthouse everyone got off the bus to take pictures. We told the group about this front range light. It was a shame we were only allowed fifteen minutes off the bus. We would have loved to get in front of the lighthouse but there were some low trees in our way. We only had a few minutes and just took our shots from one angle before getting back on the bus.
