The Sapelo Island lighthouse is several miles out from the mainland and can't be seen. The island is 11 miles long by 2 ½ miles wide. The two lighthouses are on the SSW side. There are around 60 people live on the island daily, others are visitors who rent for the weekends. There’re many historical points of interest like the Reynolds Mansion, Post Office, cemetery, store and more. Make a reservations at least 48 hours in advance with the Georgia State Parks. The 1905 steel skeleton tower stood next to the lighthouse until 1933. It was dismantled and shipped to South Fox Island in Lake Michigan, where it can still be seen today.The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
We tried to get on a boat to Sapelo Island back in 2003 but it didn't happen. In 2007 we made plans in advance and booked it. Yvonne Grovner was the tour guide for the 36 people on our tour. During our tour we saw many Live Oaks trees with Spanish Moss hanging from them and an alligator. When we got to the Sapelo Island lighthouse everyone got off the bus to take pictures. We told the group about the front range light 600 feet away. It was a shame we were only allowed fifteen minutes off the bus. We would have loved to explore the area so we could find different angles in which to photograph. Still a great trip.Photographed it: April 21, 2007
