When the Sand Island light was built 3 miles across the mouth of the bay, the Mobile Point light was downgraded to a harbor light in 1858. In September 2003, the Mobile Point lighthouse was removed from Mobile Point on the tip of the Fort Morgan peninsula. It's still in storage at Robinson Iron in Alexandria City, AL waiting for the funding for the restoration. The disassembled lighthouse is under a large metal roof.
