Other Lighthouse Information:
The Mobile Bay lighthouse is the sister of the Hooper Straight lighthouse in Tangier Sound, Maryland. The foundation is iron screw pilings. The Alabama Lighthouse Association wanted to relocate the lighthouse to the mainland so it would be easier to take care of and be accessible to the public. The Alabama Historical Commission voted against the proposed move. Now each year $30,000 is spent on maintenance and restoration at its present location in the middle of Mobile Bay.
The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
In 2004 we chartered Captain Cindy Frank of Making Waves Charters. We boarded her 31 foot boat and left the dock at the Marriott Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL at 7:20 am. The lighthouse was 6 miles away and our boat trip took a total of 90 minutes. In 2018, while with the USLHS group, we were on the 72 foot wooden Schooner Joshua, an Alabama Tall Ship. Captain Carol Bramblett took the 40 of us to the Mobile Middle Bay lighthouse and back in two hours.
