Lake Champlain is 120 miles long and the sixth largest freshwater lake in the US with 600 miles of coastline. The Burlington North Breakwater lighthouse is on a 360 foot detached breakwater. Both north and south breakwater replica lighthouses were built in 2003 and were lit on September 12, 2003. The north breakwater lighthouse is passed by the Burlington, VT - Port Kent, NY car ferry during their one hour crossing. If you get close to one of the lighthouses you can get a shot with the other in the distance. The Spirit of Ethan Allen III says they pass the breakwater lights and Juniper Island during their cruise.The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
When we first photographed the two breakwater lights in 2007 we did it from the mainland. Then in 2010 we boarded the Northern Lights Lake Champlain Cruises out of Burlington, VT. The inexpensive narrated scenic cruise aboard the 115 foot replica steamboat was enjoyable and picturesque. We cruised very close to the Burlington South Breakwater light, then distantly passed the Juniper Island light, and fairly close to the Burlington North Breakwater before again passing the south breakwater back to port.Photographed it: June 9, 2007 / September 15, 2010
