Other Lighthouse Information:
The Tillamook Rock lighthouse is 1 ¼ miles offshore. It's on a tall island less than an acre big made of solid basalt. It was the second most expensive lighthouse to be built on the west coast. The lighthouse was nicknamed "Terrible Tilly" because the keepers and suppliers had to deal with the dangerous seas and erratic weather. It was considered one of the most difficult and isolated stations. Over the past decades storms have damaged the lighthouse, shattered the lens, and has eroded the rock. Since 1980 the lighthouse has been a columbarium or a storage place for urns with deceased’s cremated remains. One can view the lighthouse from Cannon Beach’s Ecola State Park which is off of US 101. Jim Gibbs was the Lighthouse Keeper from 1945-1946. In his book "Tillamook Rock" he describes his experiences at the lighthouse.
The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
We took pictures of the lighthouse on a dreary cloudy day. We remember being in a park on a hill looking distantly at the lighthouse and doing the best we could. The next time we head out to the west coast we'll look into chartering a boat or plane.
