A replica of the 1886 lighthouse was built by the Friends of the Gulf Islands National Seashore in 2000. During Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005 the lighthouse was destroyed. The 4th Order Fresnel Lens was shattered in 100 pieces. The lens was repaired and is back on display in the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum in Biloxi, MS since April of 2010. The 80 foot skeleton tower on the site still remains an active aid to navigation. West Ship Island is 12 miles offshore and can be reached by boat. In season, the Ship Island Excursions runs a ferry to the island from Gulfport, MS. In 2011, a replica of the lighthouse was built at the Gulfport Marina 1133 20th Ave. Gulfport, MS 39501.The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
In 2004, we waited in the Ship Island Excursions line for 1 hour before loading the boat. The ferry left Gulfport, MS and took 1 hour to arrive on the island. We walked a quarter of a mile on the beach to the lighthouse. After taking our shots we took the ferry back. In 2018 while with the USLHS group bus tour we very briefly saw this replica at the Gulfport Marina.Photographed it: March 27, 2004 / April 18, 2018
