Grosse Point lighthouse is adjacent to Northwestern University, which is only 13 miles north of Chicago. It’s a nature center and maritime museum. The grounds are open year round. On the weekends during June through September one can take the tour. Visitors can climb the 141 steps to the top of the light tower. The 2nd Order Fresnel Lens is the largest lens size placed on the Great Lakes. Grosse Point’s 2nd Order Fresnel Lens was the first one installed on the Great Lakes and the only one that is still active today.
The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
The last time we photographed the Grosse Point lighthouse was on June 28, 2010. We were aboard the 110 foot Keweenaw Star photographing 21 lighthouses for the day. For this lighthouse the boat couldn't get any closer.
