Other Lighthouse Information:
The Little Cumberland Island Homeowners Association does not allow tours or access to the lighthouse. The Patrol Guards are on the look out and will arrest you. You can rent a boat to take you to Little Cumberland but non-residents can’t go past the high tide mark. A large dune protects the lighthouse from the ocean, but as a result the tower is barely visible from the water. Only the top portion can be seen over the sand dunes and the trees.
The Lighthouse Hunters Experience:
Back in 2003 we tried to find a boat ride out to the island but had no luck. But in 2008 we were prepared ahead of time. Out of Jekyll Island, GA we chartered a captain with
Coastal Expeditions. Our trip was under an hour because there was only one place to take pictures from. Our ten mile round trip was in a 23 foot center console boat. We did see some pelicans hanging out near the dock before we left for our trip. If we ever shoot this lighthouse again it would have to be by plane.
Photographed it: April 11, 2008
